Chapter 01
Hydrogen
The first element. Simple, abundant, and inclined to react.
Seventeen-year-old Ehlana Ramoutar arrives at DVINE hoping to survive her first real classroom. Before her first morning is over, she has already acquired an alarm-clock grievance, a mythology argument and the uncomfortable feeling that everyone else received instructions she somehow missed.
She came to study science. Science may have other plans.

Oxygen
Life-giving, as are friends.
Chemistry ought to be safe territory: measurable reactions, known quantities, rules. Then Ehlana meets Jade Disraeli, and an ordinary laboratory begins to feel less ordinary than it has any right to.
Some reactions begin before anyone notices the heat.

Nitrogen
Most of the air around us. Often travels in pairs.
Jade takes Ehlana behind the old library, where friendship, curiosity and one very inconvenient question begin to rearrange the shape of her first week at DVINE. The island is beautiful. The people on it are becoming harder to classify.
At DVINE, even the atmosphere is no laughing matter.

Copper
Conducts heat. Conducts electricity. Occasionally conducts trouble.
Archery, fencing and Quinn make it increasingly difficult for Ehlana to pretend that DVINE will be a quiet academic experiment. A fleeting impression she cannot explain leaves her with a question she did not know she was carrying.
Some things travel through you before you know where they came from.

Tellurium
Rare, brittle, and much more interesting than its abundance would suggest.
Game night should be recreational. Instead there are Canadians arguing about Euchre, students weaponising board-game rules, and the growing suspicion that fitting in at DVINE may be every bit as complicated as understanding it.
Belonging has rules, though everyone at the table seems to have brought their own.
